The Second Commandment and the Deaf

A discussion vlog: Carl Schroeder discusses whether Deaf babies are endowed within the image of God. Although he is not very religious, he has been appalled by people who attempted to create the image of God in DVTV. The creation of any image of anything at all, whether divine or mundane, that makes Deaf babies hear is already a no-no!

What do you have to say about Jesus healing a deaf man? Does that not indicate that on Earth, because of "sin" we are not perfect, but in Heaven, we will be whole. And, the fact that Jesus healed a deaf man says that it is ok for one to heal a deaf man, thus, making him hear?

By the way, my interpretation of the second commandment is meant to forbid people from worshiping anything in Gods image, including assuming what He looks like. And, that includes having a cross, statues in places of worship, etc. The purpose of that commandment was to stop the people from worshiping the golden cow as indicated in the Bible.

Anyhow, I'd like your thoughts on the first paragraph.

Thank you!

You made some interesting points, I heard you out.

I'd like to express some things as gently and non-pushy as much as possible. It is an innocent viewpoint I have:

Here is what the 2nd Commandment says:

"You shall not make for yourself any carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God."

Carl, God is a Spirit. We have never seen God. If we use our imagination to make Him what he is not, man cannot conceive accurately what God really looks like. It leads to misinterpretation, possibly.

Secondly, imaginations that are vain (If God is Holy, it is a higher nature than the sinful mankind) are offensive to God. It is because of his higher & Spiritual state. A spiritual entity has a different way of thinking than a human being's. How can we blame God for thinking in a different way than we do? Same as a Judge thinks differently than a defendant in a court of law might?

Also the Bible has a verse saying we must worship God in Spirit and Truth.

If we carve out graven images to worship, is that worshiping God in Spirit? God IS a Spirit, therefore, it would offend God if we made an image to worship instead of directing our eyes to the "unseen" supernatural forces that God possesses.

God wants people to have faith in the unseen, believing without seeing. There is a scripture saying we cannot please God without faith.

A carved image cannot stop the waves of the waters, or make the storms still. Only a supernatural force that is a spiritual entity can. That is why, when Jesus made the stormy waves stop and the waters still, the people on the ship marveled and said, "What manner of man are you, that can command the winds and the waves to stop?"

The only explanation is, that Jesus was the son of God who is a spiritual entity, that has supernatural powers.

In the old testament where it says we should not curse the deaf - God is trying to protect the deaf from hearing people who persecute them simply because they cannot hear. God warns against causing the blind to stumble, because we can make them trip and fall. We cannot curse the deaf, because they cannot hear us say that, but God hears every word people say to us, so God issues the warning not to curse the deaf.

We are made in the image of God, and God healed every kind of disease known to man, every disability, too. Jesus opened the eyes of the blind and opened the ears of the deaf.

We are not cursed. We are God's children, deaf or not. God just does not want people to curse us because it is wrong. He wouldn't have mentioned that in the Bible if it was OK to curse the deaf.

I hope this information helps, and that this viewpoint soothes things out. God LOVED the world, including us, that he sent his only Son, Jesus.

Gina Alberti Sutton,

I beg to disagree with you. Only Jesus (or shall I say God) can make others hear. Why work to beat God?
