A discussion vlog by Carl Schroeder: To provide the same high quality, we needed to expose ASL without being substitled or captioned because it's what we need. We must have political and economical supports for our language and culture. ASL vlogs have been the standard document for communicating internally in our community and culture. We must not be under illusion that we must submit ourselves to English-speaking people.

Oh, what about those deaf-blind who benefits from subtitling?
Ok, I'm going to advocate that captionings be removed from every media because like you, hearings should not be under the illusion that they must submit themselves to ASL-signing people.
yeah...I think I just might do that!
I truly respect your opinions, smile.
I only ask you to please consider the Deaf-Blind community as well. I hope you do realise I do miss out your interesting vlogs when you do not subtitle.
I can still communicate through my language, ASL.. using tactile.
Just because one vlogger chooses to subtitle his/her vlogs to make things accessible for the Deaf-Blind community does not mean disrespect to ASL or Deaf Culture.
Tactile smile,
Patty
You made me smile and giggle about how hearing teacher be stupid when using captions and ASL at the same time to teach interpreter students.
As for Deaf- Blind people, they can get Deaf visual interpreters to enjoy your vlogs. That way Deaf interpreters have more jobs.
Way to go Carl and get well soon.
Merle
If I go to a library, I'll see all books that are in English text. There are no translated versions for other language (German, Italian, such) in one same book. There are books in audio tapes/cds but those are in English.
If I want to read a book written in Spanish, I have to learn Spanish. Same true goes with other books in other languages. That same principle applies to ASL Vlogs.
Only one thing that left me in uncertainty is what about the Deaf-Blind people?
Overall, I understand your reasoning.
:-)
I love your robe LOL. All I can say is that Deafread is not a Deafread site anymore. It is a garbage site. Deafread do not focus on ASL and culture anymore. They accept myth information and others who do not respect ASL and culture. Maybe Deafread wants to include everyone and give us opportunity to debate. However, I do not see it that way. We are wasting a lot of energy here because who do not accept ASL and our culture would never listen anyway. Deafread do not have goals and agreements to assure that our community spread out truth and accurate information about ASL and culture. I have seen few deaf friends said that they do not read anything from Deafread or even peek too. I feel dumb now. I have been asking myself am I that dumb to be bothered to peek at garbage site? I wonder and maybe I should stop peeking at Deafread site because it is mostly (not all) are garbage anyway. I am not applying you, Ella, Joey, ABC, Eggbert, and others but others who show no respect to our language and culture. I can't understand why they are allowed to use Deafread site. AGBad love Deafread. Deafread give them a lot of credit. Very true! Deafread is free and they make AGBad richer!!!
You can delete my comment, please. I am misunderstand.
Thank you.
Floridagirl.
Candy, I am sorry that I was misunderstand what you said.
Candy, This is Floridagirl
One more...Why did I say that Deafread site is free and makes AGBad richer? Imagine everyday hearing people from all over the globe find Deafread site and read many myth information about our language and culture which Deafread gladly accepted them on board. Then when hearing people find AGBad site...they will say oh Deafread and AGBad are on same page...they will say...wonderful...bless Deafread and donate monies to AGBad. It gives me chill when I think about this. It is not Deafread anymore. I am going to call it garbage site from now on until they change their goals and agreements. But they will not anyway. They want to walk, talk and look pretty anyway.
Hey Florida Girl, That's OK, we all misunderstand from time to time. I would be ok too, if you didn't agree with me. Tis just my opinion, is all. Take care~
Hello Carl,
We've fought so hard as a collective group for full access to TV and movies through captioning. It has taken us a long, long, long time to achieve this goal which has not been fully realized yet, so let's reserve our energies for this important ongoing battle rather than trying to defend ourselves against bloggers like MM and SG who insist that we should caption our vlogs. Regardless, thank you for offering your defense.
We certainly have to acknowledge the weakness of not making our vlogs accessible to certain audiences such as non-ASL hearing parents of deaf children and ASL users of the deaf/blind community. How about this strategy of vloggers providing transcripts or summaries via email to folks who request them with the understanding that they do not post them publicly? Yes, this would mean more work for vloggers who are more comfortable expressing themselves in ASL, but it might mean establishing collegial relationships with non-ASL folks who can be encouraged to enter our beautiful world of ASL and become our allies.
What are your thoughts?
Pamela R. Conley
Since technology is advanced today...I suggest someone to develop Deaf with blind site so they can develope and design special features for deafblind audience. I think that would be a wonderful idea. I do not want the world to think that Deaf and Deafblind have same needs and accomodation. Many ignorants think we do but it is not true. Like I said garbage site is giving out myth information about our community and needs. Sad!
We, ASL and Deaf community understand the sign language the vlogger are good enough.
"Children of God Lesson" first movie was shown with no caption but few years later, it has caption. Some deaf community already satisfied when the caption on. I wonder who ever complain and to stop the caption, I guess no one!
Carl
I can see your anger and frustration. You have very valid point.
I do agree captions in vlog while signing do cause conflict in translation.
I got into thinking, what about adding text to the bottom of vlog?
Hope you feel better.
Deb M
Deb M,
If you check around my friends here, I was not mad. I am sick, really.
OK, Carl
I disagree with you. Here is why:
We watch t.v. shows, movies, etc that provided closed captioned. Why can't we read thier lips? What would happen if they remove CC? How would you feel?
What if deaf person from another country who understand English BUT not ASL? Do you think that's fair to them? OF COURSE NOT!!
Your reasons not CC for vlogs are irrevelant.
Achoooo: Your comment is best example of defect thinking. What Carl meant that we the vloggers are not accountable to create subtitles or captions because we don't get pay to do it. Anyone who use subtitles or captions in vlog are complete volunteer, not obligate. As Carl said, "Economy." If someone pay us money, then we will do the subtitles or captions, but we didn't get any money. Therefore we are not obligate to do the subtitles or captions. Shows, movies, etc, they get paid to do it. That is completing different between them and us. Next time, think harder. It’s about the politics and economy. Carl did explain it clear as crystal. Sheesh...
I SECOND ASLPRIDE OF WHAT HE SAID.
Achooo, you need to get your facts straight.
Hi Carl
I agree with you 1000000%.
Hope you feel better :)

Carl,
I disagree with your encouragement that Vlogs should not be captioned.
But i encourage you NOT to caption your own Vlogs.
interesting post; i look forward to your next new topic.
Bravo! I agree with you and asl power! I hope you will feel better soon.
Rent a dvd.
Put it in the player.
Watch a movie with closed-captioned.
Watch it for second time with subtitle.
You will see that both are not the same.
Carl's friends were right about the error of captioning.
Carl, I kiss-fist you! I agree with you with no questions! Glad you explains this! Thanks
I am not sure if I put my comment in wrong vlog box. If I did, please move my comment here. Thank you. CJ
