I love your story and it is excellent.

I agree with Dragon that we need strong foundation (roots)to support our causes and to have stronger identity of Deaf people.

Now my question for you is that is it part of Deafhood? Just curious!

Nice vlog, Carl. Your dragon is very wise. His teaching reminds me of the following quote:

"Good parents give their children Roots and Wings. Roots to know where home is, wings to fly away and exercise what's been taught them."
-- Jonas Salk.

I think that parents in the deaf community must also give their children roots and wings.

Roots: Developing traditions as a family, growing and learning about family language, culture and heritage, helping each other -- these roots help create a strong child, a strong family bond and a close unit. Giving our children roots will help keep them grounded through tough times.

Wings: Giving our children wings (like a dragon :) ) means giving them the tools that prepare them to leave the nest, to soar above everything, explore new worlds and fly farther than we ever did. But letting them go so they may take flight is by far the most difficult challenge. However, it has to be if they are to establish their own lives.

I'm sure your wise dragon knows this as well.

Thanks for sharing a story that got me thinking.

I love this story...

I think it goes along with the concept of "Passing the Flame" (which I wrote about at my own blog recently) - before you can become a dragon that shoots out flames, you must first be the plant that spreads its roots into the ground to develop a strong foundation.

Thanks for sharing!

Hi Carl ~

Most welcome...I would like to suggest that if you could find a way to archive all of your ASL Dragon stories in one group, that would be great, so I can watch them all without having to dig thru all of your vlogs to find them...is that possible (if it hasn't been done already?)

I did respond to your email to me, but myway keeps screwing up and returning my email messages to you, so please check your yahoo email, you should find my response there.

Thanks!

Hi Carl -
I am a hearing person but am trying to get better at my signing so I can hopefully begin helping with interpretation for the Deaf community. I would love it if you would post a translation to your VLOGs. I am able to get the gist of what you're saying but the actual translation would greatly help my learning. Thanks for helping hearing folks understand and gain a better appreciation for your perspective!
